Sweat lodge, womb of the Earth, renewal of the sense of no body, calm liberation. BONK.
No one sees.
It's FUNNY AS HEK. The question is who is that laughing?

I was spending the night floating in a blow up boat off the end of my sister's dock in Bel Marin.
Feeling the gentle rocking of the waves, merging with the ocean, no mind. There is a light in my eyes. The neighbor has called the Sheriff because she is sure I am a peeping Tom. Is it still funny?

(extraction from my favorite Japanese poem)
    .....
the momet of parting
quiet heart
my body becoming zero and
listening carefully to
   wonder (fushigi) of living
   wonder (fushigi) of dying
flower, town, window… all
is one wonder (fushigi)
   ....

(“fushigi” is more quiet sense than “wonder”.)

Sorry for a frequent comment.
I had an opportunity to listen to a talk by the Theravada Buddhism Master entitled “Buddha’s utilization of humor”. The followings are from the talk:
It is because of his “lightness” that many people were attracted by Buddha at that time.
Buddha utilized humor to change people’s view of reality and guided them to enlightenment. (The Master cited from Buddhist scriptures several examples of dialogue with humor conducted by Buddha.)
From a viewpoint of another reality that everything is unceasingly changing, all affairs of the real world are laughable.
Those who have accepted reality of the world completely just keep smiling.

From among the parallels between clown and zen of this piece, I gave some thought to “the clown brings light into the darker emotions…”. The clown is attractive to me in its mysterious-“fushigina” in Japanese- presence. (“fushigi” means what can not be grasped by analysis.) The clown seems to keep antithetical sides of humane nature coexistent, such as wisdom vs. absurdity, joy vs. sorrow and solitariness vs. amiableness, etc., with these antitheses being transmutable into each other. So I suppose the clown’s lightness never excludes darkness and heaviness, etc. I think such presence of the clown rather than doing encourages people to accept themselves as they are, bringing healing.

I burst into laughter at the gag of the Buddha statue and the shot of Travolta. Humor can　test actual tolerance of Buddhism or Buddhists, I have got enlightened so.

I am also interested in parallel between zen and clown. I have read your several articles about zen and clown after I joined your work shop at Tokyo, Japan in March. I have practiced vipassana (meaning “precise awareness”) meditation of Theravada Buddhism (the oldest surviving Buddhist school). This practice helped me to understand and follow your instructions at the workshop because I am instructed in meditation to stop thinking and concentrate to and be aware of sensation of your body every moment, which gives you wise solutions to the real world.
Now I am wondering why I seek clowning as well as Buddhism. Probably, I as a Buddhist living an ordinary life not in religion want any means or role to communicate and share with people delight, compassion or beauty of the true world, of which Buddhism reminds me. In other words, I may expect clowning to connect “me in the real world” and ”me in the true world”.
